#45, Faded Glory, The Westward Ho
3/20/2010
618 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ.
In 1928, the Westard Ho Hotel was the tallest building constructed in Phoenix. The large radio antenna, mounted asymmetrically, reaches a height more than twice that of the building itself.
The luxury hotel was the hottest in town and hosted the rich and famous regularly. People like Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe hung out at the pool. The Ho saw its glory up to 1979, when the hotel closed its doors. In 1981 the building was reconstructed to house the lower income elderly, which it currently caters. The antenna, once used by KPHO, is no longer active.
A couple of fun facts. George Carlin stayed in the Ho the last time he visited Phoenix, prior to his death. The hotel was not featured in the original Psycho movie, it was the Jefferson Hotel. The Ho was featured in the Psycho remake with Anne Heche.
Once a hopping hotel. Now serves the community and remains a significan icon along the the Phoenix skyline.

Arizona Falls, formed by a natural 20-foot drop along the Arizona Canal between56th and 58th streets and Indian School Road.
Arizona Falls generates up to 750 kilowatts of clean, renewable electricity, which can power up to 150 homes. The roof of the new turbine building and the adjacent shade structure will house solar panels to power ceiling fans on the public deck.
The new Arizona Falls combines art, history and technology to generate clean electricity from the canal’s waterfall.

#43, Remembering Jimmy O’Conner a “Guiding Light for The Irish Culutral Center on Flickr.
1106 N Central Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85004
True Irish heritage is celebrated daily at the Irish Cultural Center. The Irish Cultural Center is owned and maintained by the city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Through a unique partnership, the non-profit Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation organizes and offers the special events and educational programs associated with the center.
One of the founding contributors of the Cultural Center was Jimmy O’Connor. Jimmy was also the owner of a well known Irish pub in Phoenix, called O’Connor’s. The Center saw him as a light for the Irish Center throughout the years.
Sadly, Jimmy O’Connor passed away March 14, 2010, just three days prior to his annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration at O’Connor’s. Mr. O’Connor’s life will be remembered on March 19, 2010. That day, the Irish Cultural Center will be closed for remembrance.

#42 Doing it Doggy Style - Wag-N-Wash
4230 North 7th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ
I love the Wag-N-Wash. Located on funky 7th Ave. in Phoenix, this boutique store/pet deli/do it yourself dog wash/groomer is the only one of its kind in Arizona.
I hate spending money at the groomer. But, I also hate messing up my bathtub to wash my dirty pug. The Wag-N-Wash provides indoor washrooms equipped with grooming equipment for customers to use on their dogs.
The owners of this store are very nice and helpful. In fact, they were quick to help me find an inexpensive dog food that will alleviate my pug’s digestion issues.

#41 Copenhaver Castle - A Fancy Fixer Upper
Almost every Phoenician kid I know has taken a drive up Red Rock Road on Camelback mountain to catch a glimpse of the castle. If you were chased away by the Phoenix P.D., you got an up close look at one of Phoenix’s most popular and intriguing properties.
The castle was designed after medieval architecture, featuring large stone walls, round towers, and arched windows. In the 1970’s, the castle was built over twelve years by a Phoenix orthodontist.
The castle has sat vacant for a long period of time. In the early 2000’s, the castle was listed for sale at $10,000,000.
Thanks to Phoenix’s crashing housing market, the castle can be yours for a mere $3,500,000. Apparently, there is a lot of interior work needed on this HUD home.
In October 2009, the castle made Forbes list of “America’s Strange Homes for Sale.”

Modified Arts is one of the original galleries to spawn the art scene in downtown Phoenix. For years, Modified served as a venue for indie rock bands. In late 2009, Modified converted from music venue to a full time art gallery. Now the musicians hang outside.
